(…and a simple, yet highly effective tactic you can use in your next interview!)
Do you ever wonder, as do I, how it is that some people come to be in their roles?
You know that feeling, you may have dealt with them in the workplace or received service from them as a customer – your experience is so bad you find it hard to believe this person was ever the best candidate to fill the role they’re in.
Truth be told, in business this happens all the time, and whilst there are a number of reasons it does, there is one major reason which I’ll share with you today, and it’s something you can use for your own benefit at your next job interview.
As author Neil Strauss puts it:
“Everyone’s favourite subject is themselves.”
What does this mean in the context of a job interview? Put simply, the easiest trap to fall into when interviewing for a role (particularly when your nerves are racing) is to make it all about you.
The person interviewing you, whether they be the owner of the company, a senior employee, or the HR manager, definitely does want to know all about you – but they’re also looking out for cues that you truly care and are interested in them, their company, and the role being offered up.
So, what can you to ensure you find the right balance of ‘them getting to know you, and you showing you care’ come next interview? Here is how you can turn the process in your favour and ensure you aren’t left scratching your head when they hire someone less experienced or capable than you:
- Start by imagining yourself in the shoes of the company representative who is interviewing you.
- Think about all the things that would be important to you if you were in that position.
- Remember the real reason they are interviewing you in the first place: they have a real problem they need to solve. That problem may be because of increased workflow, a poor performing predecessor, a change in company direction, or entry into a new segment of the market.
- Time to shine – the interview process, whilst a painfully short audition for a role you may be in for years or decades, is your best opportunity to position yourself as a solution to their problems.
- Ask probing, but respectful questions about the company, the direction they are heading in, and show your interest in their future – it could be a big part of your future too
- Ask your interviewer what they like most about their role within the company.

”How will you know whether you hired the right person three months from now?”
This is a direct but strategic question which will confirm you care about the results the company is hoping to achieve when filling the position.
