Do you remember the first time in your life where you felt unvalued?
For me it was the day I was left out of my primary school soccer team, despite all my mates being picked – even big Browny who was born with two left feet! Apparently, I was too small, too slow, and too timid. It was a ‘kick in the guts’ feeling I’ll never forget.   • What does the business need most of all from its employees?
  • What kind of attitude would a business owner value?
  • What would you value in an employee?

Think about those people within the business that everyone loves having in the room, and those within the business everyone loves to see leave the room – and make sure you are in the first category!

  1. Be flexible – as Hope Szymanski puts it, in a recent article published on Medium:

“Don’t be a raw spaghetti noodle — the kind of person who snaps in half when change is mentioned. Try very hard to address all problems that have to do with a change in plans with a smile and some patience.”
As businesses owners struggle to adjust their old business model to remain viable in the face of COVID-19, employees with a willingness to be flexible are valued now more than ever before.

  1. Be someone who attacks the disease, not the symptoms:

Inc. 500 entrepreneur and best-selling author Kevin Daum talks about the importance of being an employee whose “contribution far outweighs their cost, regardless of their expense.” The best way to do this, writes Daum in an article published on Inc. is to care about truly solving problems.
“So much company time goes to firefighting on a reactive basis. Employees create value when they assess the root cause of the problems and make systemic change that eliminates the problems completely.”
Every great business has this kind of employee, and the great businesses have them in spades. Put yourself in this category and your boss will forever see you as in investment, not a cost.
