By now, many of us have begun to grow tired of reading about the likely prolonged and painful economic impact of the pandemic. Business closures, job losses, rising unemployment rates – 2020 continues to present employees and employers with something we are beginning to all detest: uncertainty.
What is certain however, is that 2020 has forced employees and employers alike to look at how they can do things better, more efficiently and more effectively to survive. Put simply, this has not been a year to make hay while the sun shines – 2020 is undoubtedly a year to be making lemonade out of lemons, and takeaway lemonade for that matter!
So, as business owners turn their attention to modifying dated business models to ensure they remain valued and valid in the eyes of their customers, so too employees are looking at opportunities to position themselves as being of greater value in a sea of rising competition.
One of the best ways to do this, to stand out, and to be of such great value to an employer that they can’t possibly afford to let you go – is to follow the lead of someone who know a thing or two about creating value.
When asked recently by university graduate Michael Hood which skill he recommends people focus on getting better at, Buffet replied without hesitation —
“Invest in yourself. The one easy way to become worth 50 percent more than you are now, at least, is to hone your communication skills — both written and verbal. If you can’t communicate, it’s like winking at a girl in the dark — nothing happens. You can have all the brainpower in the world, but you have to be able to transmit it.”
In the context of the business world, Buffet’s message is clear – you’ve got to be able to communicate clearly and effectively in order to make things happen. Those who make things happen will forever excel over those who hold onto great ideas that are never communicated.
