You know those incredible ‘aha’ moments in life? When you finally figure out how the world really works. I had one of these moments in 2018. And it changed my outlook on life forever.

I’ll share it with you here in the hope you don’t waste the time I once did.

It was the day I learnt that being rich won’t make you happy, but being happy can make you rich.

It all has to do with the little-known fact that success in life has a great deal more to do with your mental state than any possession, number, skill or talent.

Put simply: when you’re happier you free up energy that would otherwise be lost to worry or fear. Energy you can put into your work. Allowing you to become more successful at what you do and more valuable to clients and your employer. Value that can ultimately translate into you earning more money.      

If you’re looking to earn more money, here are some simple steps you can follow to become happier and more successful in the process:

  1. Secure your baseline income –

    As outlined in an article published by CNBC “a 2010 study out of Princeton University found that there’s a correlation between happiness and wealth, to a point of about $75,000 per year. When people make more than $75,000 a year, their happiness doesn’t increase, but the lower their income is the worse they feel.”

    Author Dave Asprey talks about this in New York Times Best seller ‘Game Changers’ when he says “Finding sustainable happiness is possible only when a few standards are met, including both mental and physical freedom. This means having enough money so that you feel somewhat secure instead of being constantly stressed about finances.”

    Securing your baseline income, whatever you determine that to be, is the first and most important step in becoming happier.
  1. Practice gratitude, hack happiness –

    Hugh van Cuylenburg, founder of  The Resilience Project likes to refer to the traditional model of happiness as being the “if and then” model of happiness – eg: if I make $150,000, then I’ll feel happy.

    And whilst this may deliver some short-term happiness, in order to be sustainably happy, you must be satisfied with what you have right now. The best way to do this, as Van Cuylenburg explains, is to practice gratitude. Gratitude is where happiness comes from. 
  1. Fire your bad boss –

    We have all had at least one, you may have had two or three: the unrelenting boss who rules with an iron first, takes no prisoners, and has you living in a state of constant fear. They’re the person you dread seeing every Monday morning, and the last thing you think about before going to bed each night.

    Truth be told, they could be costing you far more than a peaceful night’s sleep.

    Dave Asprey highlights why, in a key learning from the 450 interviews that inspired the book ‘Game Changers’ – “freedom from fear leads to happiness, and happiness is what makes you perform your best at whatever you choose to do….” Asprey adds “it’s hard to be happy when your body is in panic mode focusing on survival.”
